Statement Showing Arrangements Made for Maternity and
Child Welfare.
1. Population of the area served by the Council, 92,320.
2. Number of births notified in that area during the year under the
tion of Births Act, 1907, as adjusted by any transferred notifications :
(a) Live births, 815; (b) Still births, 30; (c) Total,* 845; (d) By midwives,*
262; (e) By doctors and parents, 105; By hospitals, 256; By Nursing
Homes, 52; Inward transfers, 170.*
3. Health Visiting.
(i) Number of officers employed for health visiting at the end of the
year : (a) by the Council, 6; (b) by Voluntary Associations, 2.
(ii) Equivalent of whole time services devoted by the whole staff to
health visiting (including attendance at infant welfare centres): —
(a) in the case of Health Visitors employed by the Council, 5; (b) in
the case of Health Visitors employed by Voluntary Associations, 1.
(iii) Number of visits paid during the year by all Health Visitors :— (a)
To expectant mothers, first visits,† 326; total visits, 518. (b) To
children under 1 year of age, first visits,† 615; total visits, 5,323.
(c) To children between the ages of 1 and 5 years, total visits, 7,021.
*The total of the figures given under (d) and (e) should agree with the figure
under (c).
†Excluding cases which are known to have previously been visited in another
district.
4. Infant Welfare Centres.
(a) Number of Centres provided and maintained by the Council, one
(Three year old pre-school clinic.)
(b) Number of Centres provided and maintained by Voluntary Associations,

(c) Total number of attendances at all Centres during the year: (i) By
children under 1 year of age, 7,780; (ii) By children between the
ages of 1 and 5 years, 9,097 (including 111 3-year-olds).
(d) Total number of children who attended at the Centres for the first
time during the year and who, on the date of their first attendance,
were: (i) Under 1 year of age,* 531; (ii) between the ages of 1
and 5 years, 253 (including 111 3-year-olds).
(e) Total number of children who attended at the Centres during the
year and who, at the end of the year, were: (i) Under 1 year of
age, 445; (ii) between the ages of 1 and 5 years, 833.
(f) Percentage of notified live births represented by the number in (d)
(i), 65.
5. Ante-natal clinics (whether held at Infant Welfare Centres or at other
premises) : —
(a) Number of Clinics† provided and maintained by the Council, nil.
(b) Number of Clinics provided and maintained by Voluntary

(c) Total number of attendances by expectant mothers at all Clinics
during the year, 2,051.
(d) Total number of expectant mothers who attended at the Clinics during
