Deaths from Phthisis.—Some reference has already been made to the matter
of deaths from tuberculosis and at this point it is proposed only to deal with the
figures relating; to tuberculosis of the lungs (consumption or phthisis).
During 1933 the total number certified as due to this cause was 56, the deathrate
being 0.16 per 1,000. In 1932 the deaths numbered 67, the death-rate being
0.7 per 1,000. The distribution of the deaths according to registration districts is
shown in the accompanying table, which gives also the figures for each of the
5 years 1929-1933.

The distribution of the 56 deaths was as follows:—In Poor Law Institutions,
30; in general and other hospitals, 9; and at home, 17.
Of those who died 36 were insured (27 males and 9 females), and 20 uninsured
(12 males and 8 females).
As it may be useful for statistical purposes it may be mentioned that while the
deaths numbered 56. the notified cases of pulmonary tuberculosis totalled 148.

The following table prepared at the request of the Ministry of Health contains information with regard to age and sex distribution of all forms of tuberculosis that may be found interesting.
