Cleansing Baths.
The important extension of the baths at the shelter is
practically complete. There is now the following accommodation:
three baths for men, three for women, and five
for children (two being for male and three for female
children), total number, eleven.
Appointment of Chief Sanitary Inspector.
My own opinion with regard to increase of staff did
not entirely accord with that of the special committee, nor
with that of the Council. I would have preferred to have
seen the medical side of the work more developed rather
than what may be called the constructional, especially as
the appointment of a chief sanitary inspector in other
districts does not appear to have been uniformly successful.
The Council have, however, adopted the view that it is
desirable to have a superior officer, and this being so it is
the duty of the department to see that there is 110 friction
after his appointment, and that the greatest use of his
services be obtained. The duties are not yet defined, but
before advertising these will be settled by the Public
Health Committee.
