CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT.
The free baths established under the Cleansing Act, for the
purpose of cleansing persons in so dirty a state that it is not
desirable to admit them into the Public Baths of the district have
been in full operation during the year. The comparative tabular
statement shows a large increase in the number of males and
especially in the number of females admitted. A great proportion
of the female applicants are of the poorest class, and not
a few are ill provided with underclothing. Owing to the
kindness of one of the Councillors and others, small sums of
money from time to time have been placed at the writer's
disposal for the purpose of supplying some of the worst cases
with necessary covering. Miss Kilgallin has performed this task
with fairness. and discretion. It may as well be stated here, that
chemises, stockings, petticoats, and shoes or boots in fair condition
will be thankfully received by the Matron, for the purpose of
replacing any similar articles of clothing which are not worth
disinfecting, but rather should be destroyed, or for supplying such
articles to those who are destitute of them, a similar remark
applies to suitable articles of men's clothing.
