PRACTICAL SANITARY WORK.
A tabular statement is given of the work of each of the
Sanitary Inspectors on pages 30-31. Complaints of sanitary
defects were received and promptly attended to in 1,358 cases.
The work of supervising new drainage works has been exceptionally
heavy during the year, because so many new buildings
are in course of construction.
Two of the Inspectors, Mr. Richard Phillips and Miss
Frances Baker, have special duties. Their reports of the year's
work are as follows :—
THE REPORT OF MISS F. BAKER.
January, 1905.
" I beg to report the following with reference to the work
of the year 1904 :—
Workshops on register at end of 1903 2,164
„ „ „ 1904 2,260
No. added during the year 303
No. of removals 207
Businesses represented by this No. 1,876
No. of re-inspections made 714
The work done on these premises represents various kinds
of clothing and articles of dress, tailoring and dressmaking taking
the lead. Only 6 cases of overcrowding have been detected, and
these were chiefly owing to carelessness on the part of the person
in charge of the room. The attention given to appliances and
methods of heating the workrooms is much improved, and occupiers
are realising that this is as essential as having adequate cubic space
for their workers. 107 various complaints have been received,
and the cases investigated; and at 128 premises cleansing and
limewashing have been done. The defects of 26 sanitary
accommodations have been remedied, besides which many other
matters of insanitary condition have been rectified.
Outworkers.
No. resident in Borough at end of 1903 491
,, „ „ ,, 1904 625
No. of removals during the year 88
No. received from other Boroughs 239
No. transferred 285
726 visits have been paid to Outworkers, and this number
represents only those who work alone for London firms, not
including those who have opened workrooms and employ other
hands.
The number of Laundries on the register is only 27, and
owing to the fact that few premises in the Borough are suitable
for this business, the number varies very slightly.
