It is stated there is a small loss on the "Family Home"
scheme.

The number of houses erected or re-constructed under the powers of the 1866 Act and subsequent Improvement Acts are as follows:—

The total population housed is given as 11,500. The
rents charged for the
One apartment houses are from 1/8 to 3/5 per week.
Two „ „ „ 2/7 „ 5/5
Three , „ „ 4/9 „ 8/0
These are lower rents than the rents in Marylebone for
the same class of property.
The financial result of the schemes is set forth as
follows:—
Total amount of Assessment from
1866—1897, when it ceased £597,003 0 11
Nett free assets over liabilities,
May 31st, 1903 £28,616 17 10
Total cost to ratepayers £568,386 3 1
For this they have obtained
(1.) The Alexandra Park, a fine park of 104 acres.
(2.) 98,929 square yards of ground applied in the
formation of 30 new streets, and in the improvement of
26 existing streets.
(3.) Various other public works.
The great problem in St. Marylebone and in the
Metropolis generally, is that of housing the poorest classes.
