Health of the District.
The general death rate for April has been much lower
than usual. This is in the main owing to the very low
mortality from scarlet fever and diphtheria with other zymotic
diseases. The average mortality from infectious diseases
for April is a little over 2 per 1,000 of population, this,
during the past live weeks has fallen to 7 per 1,000.
The Shelter, Grove Road.
The Shelter has been re-papered, re-painted, the ceilings
white-washed, and the interior generally decorated. A
necessary work after the small pox epidemic, besides which
the place for some years has had nothing done to it save the
usual cleansing operations. Last year it was almost continuously
occupied from January to the beginning of August,
by families turned out of their rooms temporarily to
enable the Officers to properly disinfect. Since August
up to the present, it has been used very little. Infectious
fevers generally having been but little prevalent.
The Baths, Grove Road.
The Cleansing Baths continue to be used and are doing
good work. It is gratifying to observe that the number of
females taking advantage of the cleansing facilities have
much increased, the returns for the month being
Males - 364
Females - 31
Total 395
