The Health of the District during November.
The moderate temperature and for the most part clear
atmosphere of November, 1903, decreased the amount of
chest maladies materially and thus lowered the average
death rate. Small-pox still continues absent although
there have been cases in several other districts in the
Metropolitan area. The only zymotic disease that shows
an excess above the mean is diphtheria.
Prosecution under the Public Health Act.
The owner of 107, Princess Street, Edgware Road, was
summoned for neglecting to provide the house with a water
supply. The Magistrate made an order to close the premises
with 23s. costs.
Housing of the Working Classes Act.
The writer has made a report under the Housing of the
Working Classes Act, with reference to No. 11, High Street,
St. John's Wood, which has become so dilapidated as to be
unfit for human habitation. The Public Health Committee
ordered the necessary notices to be served. This house with
several others on the Howard de Walden Estate are to be
pulled down and no doubt improved premises will be
ultimately built in their place. For some reason or other,
however, the schemes are delayed in execution and the
condemned houses go from bad to worse. Even the best
built houses after a few years require an annual expenditure
to maintain them in repair, much more houses of 70 and 100
years old.
