Health of the District for October.
The death-rate is about the average. The ordinary
infectious diseases, as shown by the curve, have been
generally below the average.
A single case of modified extremely mild smallpox was
notified, under circumstances which are not favourable to its
farther extension.
Prosecution under the Public Health (London) Act.
The owner of Nos. 3 and 4, Wellington Place was
summoned for not obeying a notice requiring new drains
throughout the premises. The case was adjourned for
three weeks for the work to be done.
Housing of the Working Classes Act.
Bentinck Court and Williams Cottages are situated in
a rectangular court approached through an archway out of
Henry Street, St. John's Wood, and also by a narrow
passage from Upper William Street. The number of houses
in Bentinck Court is 15, in Williams Cottages 4, the latter
used to be separated from the court by a partition, this,
however, became dilapidated, was destroyed by the occupants
and not re-constructed. All the houses are tworoomed
houses, and therefore each house is only large
enough for a single family. The long lease expired
about two years ago, a building contract for a lease
has been granted by the freeholders (the Howard de
Walden Estate) but no lease has been actually entered into,
As usual, with tenement property, at the end of a lease,
the structure generally of these cottages has deteriorated
so that they are no longer fit for habitation. After waiting
for signs of closing the court and demolition of the
houses, the writer felt compelled to make an official
representation, and the Public Health Committee ordered
