Health of the District.
Once more the death-rate is so low as to be phenomenal.
The average death-rate for the month of July is
usually low, something about 15 per thousand, but the past
July death-rate does not attain 11 per thousand. This is
mainly to be attributed to the favourable temperatures, to
the absence of diarrhoea and to the general decline of
infectious maladies.
Prosecution under the Housing of the Working
Classes Act.
Proceedings before the Magistrate have been commenced
for the purpose of closing No. 11, Gees Court as
unfit for habitation. The owner, having undertaken to
clear the premises of the tenants and to execute as soon as
practicable the necessary works, the hearing of the
summons has been adjourned six weeks.
Housing of the Working Classes.
The fine series of Artisans' Buildings, erected by Lord
Portman in Queen Street, is a most important advance in
the solution of the difficult problem of housing at reasonable
rates the classes which earn by their labour a
moderate weekly wage.
The buildings consist of four blocks, and contain 176
tenements, as follows:—
One-roomed tenements 74
Two-roomed tenements 78
Three-roomed tenements 23
There is one four-roomed tenement, the fourth room
being used as an office.
