Smallpox.
Contrary to all precedent the outbreak of smallpox,
instead of increasing towards the month of May, shows
decided indications of abatement. During the five weeks
ending April 3rd there have only been notified 10 cases
within the Borough, of these 10 cases one properly belongs
to another district; the patient walking in from Notting Hill
with the eruption out on him.
Prosecution under the Public Health (London) Act.
No. 25, Harcourt Street, having apparently no responsible
owner, was closed by Magistrate's Order. The
premises were in a general insanitary state, and the water
supply had been cut off.
Housing of the Public Health Department.
The Town Hall has long been too small for the immense
amount of public business there transacted. The writer
some time ago recommended that partial relief would be
given, by the transference of the Sanitary Department to a
separate building, and this suggestion has at length found
favour with the Council on the recommendation of the
Housing Committee. A rent of £120 is the maximum fixed
by the Finance Committee. Hence, the choice of premises,
considering that they must be in a central situation, is
limited. The writer has recommended what appears to be
a convenient house in situation and size to the Housing
Committee, and negotiations are in progress. It is to be
hoped that the move will be accomplished before the long
vacation.
