(2) That freshly made ground lime be freely sprinkled
over the coffin, the soil, or any matter that may be
offensive.
In those eases where the remains were removed to other
3ountries, it was required that they be placed in a lead lined
shell which shall be hermetically sealed.
Whilst in other cases the remains were contained in well
pitched shells and entirely surrounded by four inches of newly
made vegetable charcoal in powder.
The work of removal and re-interrnent was carried out in
accordance with the conditions and under the supervision of
the Sanitary inspector on my behalf.
HEALTH WEEK.
The Health Exhibition held in May proved to be an outstanding
success, and afforded a very efficient means of propaganda
work.
Twenty-eight stalls were erected in the Large Hall in which
various exhibits and demonstrations in clean foods, health
and cleanliness, hygiene, dental work, labour-saving devices,
diseased and unsound foods, <&c., were given.
Cooking demontrations were held twice daily and lectures
wth films were given each afternoon and evening.
Six hundred school children visited the Exhibition by
arrangement with the School Authorities, when lectures and
demonstrations were given at certain selected stalls. They
were afterwards shown a film on the care of teeth.
I am of opinion that this exhibition provided a very efficient
means of instruction and enlightenment of the public.
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
The figures tabulated below, indicate in some measure the
extent of the ground to be covered on the one hand, and on
the other the success of the work accomplished in the interests
of Maternity and Child Welfare:—
Number of Births registered during the year 1,798
Corrected Number of Births 2,076
These figures represent, a Birth-rate per 1,000 of the population
of the Borough of 15.6
Corrected Number of Deaths of Infants under one year, of
whom 41 died under one week 1.26
Legitimate Infants—104 or 54 per 1,000 Births.
Illegitimate Infants—22, or 172 per 1,000 Births.
Infant Mortality Rate per 1,000 Births 61
The work undertaken under this heading in the Borough
during the year 1927 was continued on similar lines to
previous years.
