one room only; 439 persons suffering from Scarlet Fever were removed

ENTERIC FEVER.
(19 deaths. Decennial average 23.)
The total number of Enteric Fever cases reported during the year
was 104 ; and of these eighteen died, representing a case mortality
of 18.3 on the notifications. A death was also certified as continued
fever; this was probably a case of Typhoid. The deaths are
equal to a rate of 0.14 per thousand population. Of the cases, 37
were notified from the North district with six deaths, 39 from the
South with four deaths, and 27 from the East with nine deaths.
In 53 instances the residence of the patient was found to be in a
satisfactory condition, but in 27 the water.closets were defective.
In ten the external drainage arrangements were faulty; in six the
drains inside the house were leaky ; and other insanitary conditions
were found in 36 instances. Six cases occurred in families inhabiting
one room only.
The patients removed to Hospital numbered 70, of whom ten
died.
TYPHUS.
The death of one man was registered as from this cause, he was
a wood.carver, aged 72, and he died comatose at 19, Tyrell Street.
The case was notified to me after death by the Medical Attendant.
I carefully inquired into the circumstances of the case but could
find nothing to confirm the diagnosis of Typhus. I may mention
that this was the only death registered in London as from Typhus
during 1897.
ASYLUMS BOARD HOSPITALS.
The following table shews the admissions to, and discharges from
Asylums Board Hospitals, of patients suffering from Diphtheria and
fevers of various kinds. In addition to these some cases of Typhoid
were treated in General Hospitals, and some Diphtheria cases requiring
immediate operation were admitted to the London Hospital
and the North Eastern Hospital for children.
