Aroma	Informal	Consisted of caramel colouring powder.	These samples were acquired because of the apparently misleading labels. The manufacturers were requested to comment upon the opinion expressed by the Public Analyst, and several consultations took place with their representative with a view to the design of new labels which would comply with statutory requirements. Proposed revised labels were subsequently submitted to and were approved by this Department.
Aroma	Informal	Consisted of caramel colouring powder.
Aroma Coffee Blender	Informal	Consisted of caramel colouring matter.
Coffee + 6% Aroma	Informal	Consisted of coffee with added caramel.
Enriched Catering Coffe	Informal	Consisted of coffee with added caramel.
Instant Coffee + 12% Aroma	Informal	Consisted of dry coffee extract with added caramel and calcium phosphate.
Beef Chipolata Sausages	Informal	Contained sulphur dioxide, 310 parts per million, notwithstanding the fact that a suitable notice concerning the presence of preservatives was not exhibited in the shop.	Appropriate representations were made to the manufacturers who in this instance were also the retailers. It was also recommended that the sausages be wrapped and that the necessary declaration concerning the presence of preservatives be incorporated in the wrapper. This recommendation was subsequently put into effect.
Beef Sausages	Informal	Contained sulphur dioxide, 360 parts per million, notwithstanding the fact that a suitable notice concerning the presence of preservatives was not exhibited in the shop.
Boston Cream Pie	Informal	The sample contained no cream.	Manufacturers have already had their attention drawn to this matter by the Middlesex Authorities. As far as this department is concerned the matter has been left in abeyance pending the conclusion of the discussions between Middlesex and the Manufacturers.
* Bread and Butter Sandwich	Informal	Contained an extensive red discolouration on the buttered surfaces due to the presence of finely ground particles of iron oxide.	From investigations and further inquiries it ia fairly certain that this colouring arose during the preparation of the sandwich in the complainant's home.
Camembert Cheese	Informal	The sample had deteriorated, being shrivelled, mouldy and unsuitable for sale.	Representations made to vendor— remaining stocks in order.
* Chicken and Ham Patty	Informal	Contained ten small live fly maggots.	Written representations made to vendor and manufacturer.
* Chicken Pie	Informal	Contained only 5V4 per cent, of chicken meat.	Vendors immediately stopped sale of pies. Pies manufactured in West Ham. The West Ham authorities have continued the investigation.
* Chicken Pie	Informal	Contained only 13 per cent, of chicken meat.	Vendors immediately stopped sale of pies. Pies manufactured in West Ham. The West Ham authorities have continued the Investigation.
Chopped Ham	Informal	Contained only 76 per cent, of ham.	Representations made to vendors who immediately withdrew this product from sale.
* Corned Beef (opened)	Informal	This can showed extensive sul-phiding and rusting on the interior surface, and the contents, which had partly dried out became discoloured, and were unfit for consumption.	This can was old stock and there was probably a latent defect in the original canning process.
Cough Syrup	Informal	Contained Vitamin C, 0.71 per cent, contrary to the declaration on the label which was Vitamin C, 0.21 per cent.	Written representations to the manufacturers regarding excess vitamin "C".
