Vaccination.—The Vaccination Acts were repealed by the National Health Service Act, 1946,
which came into operation on 5th July, 1948 ; the Vaccination Officer's appointment was accordingly
terminated on 4th July, 1948.
Of the 525 births notified to the Vaccination Officer during 1947, 221 had been successfully
vaccinated by the 4th July, 1948 ; 10 had died before the age for vaccination and one was insusceptible.
Vaccination was postponed in two cases, and 215 had removed into other districts. Seven
cases were pending. There were 69 cases of conscientious objection. The Public Vaccinator performed
13 revaccinations during the six months ending 4th July, 1948, and in addition to the successful
vaccinations referred to above, 2 adults were vaccinated for the first time.
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
On July 5th, 1948, the " Appointed Day " under the National Health Service Act, 1946, the
functions exercised by the Corporation in connection with Maternity and Child Welfare were transferred
to the London County Council, and the information given below therefore relates only to the
period 1st January to 4th July.

510 packets of Dried Milk were supplied to children 0-2 years of age ; also 122 packets Farex
and 90 bottles Radiostoleum to mothers and children.
Liquid Milk, Cod Liver Oil and Fruit Juices were distributed through the Child Welfare Centre
to mothers and children on behalf of the Food Office.
The death under one year referred to above in the paragraph on Statistical Information relates
to a newly-born infant found in a devastated area 17/19, Gravel Lane, E.C., the cause of death being
lack of attention at birth.
No evidence of infestation by head lice was observed in any City child.
