The following figures have been supplied to me by the City Engineer:—
Brick sewers reconstructed and in course of reconstructing 5

Number of rats destroyed by sewermen during year 635
Fifty-six pounds of rat poison were used in the sewers. A large number of dead rats
were, doubtle'ss, carried away by the flow of water in the various sewers.
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS.
In accordance with the Standing Order of the Court that no person shall enter the
employ of the Corporation or of any of its Committees without previously passing a medical
examination to the satisfaction of the Committee having cognizance of the appointment,
105 persons were examined by your Medical Officer of Health during 1938. One hundred
and two of these persons were reported as physically fit for office. Nineteen officers were
also medically examined with a view to their retirement. With three exceptions, all were
reported to be unfit for duty.
