My Lord Mayor and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present my Annual Report on the work of the Medical Officer of
Health's Department of the Corporation of the City of London for the year 1937. During
the year, Mr. J. O. Sharp, Senior Inspector of Meat for the City, retired after 45 years' loyal
and capable service, and I should like to place on record my appreciation of the assistance
which I received from him during the short time we were associated in this Department.
I know also that my predecessor, the late Dr. Willoughby, valued very highly the special
knowledge of every aspect of meat inspection possessed by Mr. Sharp, who, before he became
a meat inspector, had the benefit, in his early youth, of a practical training in the hutching
trade.
statistical information.
Area.—The City of London (excluding The Temple) comprises an area of 661 acres
(excluding tidal water and foreshore), or 1.032 square miles.
The area of "Registration London" is 74,817 acres (excluding tidal water and foreshore),
or 116-9 square miles.
Density.—City of London Registration District, at night, 17.3 persons to an acre;
City of London Registration District, during the day, *664.1 persons to an acre; Registration
London, at night, 59.5 persons to an acre.
Annual Rateable Value.—The rateable value of property within the administrative
county of London (including the City) was £60,648,605, on April 6th, 1937, whilst on the
same date the corresponding rateable value of property in the City of London was £8,203,193,
or about one-seventh of the whole County.
The annual sum receivable from a penny rate is £31,500.

Ihese figures represent the population on the nights of the 3rd April, 1911, and the
19th lune, 1921.

"This figure refers only to persons "actively engaged in the City during the daytime," and is based upon
the Imperial Census taken in lune, 1921.
