PUBLIC HEALTH (MEAT) REGULATIONS, 1924.
There are two wholesale meat markets in the City of London, situated at Smithfield
and Aldgate, and one retail meat market, situated at Leadenhall Street.
Smithfield Market.—This market covers an area of nine acres and is the largest
dead meat market in the world.
Transport at Smithfield.—All classes of transport of meat to and from the markets
operate :—
(1) Meat Carriers.
(2) Butchers, by means of their own vehicles.
(3) Railway Companies.
(1) Carriers.—The general condition of the vehicles used by the carriers is of a good
standard, and the majority of carriers follow the Regulations. During the year it has not
been necessary to take proceedings against any of them for non-compliance in respect of
the condition of their vehicles.
The class of carrier requiring supervision is that in which only one or two vehicles are
owned, hence there is difficulty in sparing one of the vehicles for renovation, and painting
or repair is generally of a hurried nature.
(2) Butchers' Own Vehicles.—The type of vehicle used by retail butchers varies from
hand-barrows and carrier cycles to horse traps and model meat vans, but the number of
model vans is steadily increasing, thereby allowing more time for the supervision of other
vehicles, many of which are far from realising a desirable standard.
The use of private cars is still a source of trouble, and shows a tendency to increase
in spite of prosecutions instituted against some of the offenders.
It is found that the butcher using a private car is in a small way of business : in some
cases the offenders are street butchers.
