and stillish air, is turned to murk and grime by the domestic hearth burning domestic coal.
The very successful gas-and-coke fires are the variants with low temperature carbonised
fuel, and these should be developed and made available. The time of turnover to the awaited
perfect system of ventilation and heating is, in my opinion, most easily and satisfactorily
filled in by gas and coke in combination, and by low temperature carbonisation products
burned in the open hearth, which thus gives the cheer of a sufficient flicker, adequate
movement of air ventilation in a room with closed doors, and a minimal quantity of smoke.
It is grand to consummate a great scheme of change: it is more in the realm of practical
evolution to proceed gradually along the lines which have been ingrained in English domestic
economy where the household chimney is at fault.
