PUBLIC HEALTH (SMOKE ABATEMENT) ACT, 1926.
A valuable addition to the Public Health laws, the Public Health (Smoke Abatement)
Act, 1926, came into operation on the 1st July of this year.
The Act increases in one important direction the powers already possessed by local
authorities for controlling nuisances which arise from smoke. In the past the greatest
difficulty in dealing with complaints of smoke nuisance has been due to the fact that "black"
smoke only was referred to in the Smoke Clauses of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
In the new Act, however, the word "black" has been omitted, and action can now be
taken in the case of a chimney, not being the chimney of a private dwelling.house, which
