VENEREAL DISEASE EDUCATIONAL AND PROPAGANDA WORK.
On the application of the British Social Hygiene Council, the City Corporation made
a grant of fifty guineas per annum towards expenses incurred in connection with educational
and propaganda work which that Council carry out as part of their campaign against the
incidence of venereal disease.
It is, of course, highly desirable that public enlightenment should continue, and the
Corporation recognise readily the able manner in which this delicate and difficult task has
been carried out by the Council for some years past.
CONGRESSES.
Royal Sanitary Institute, Hastings
The Congress of the Royal Sanitary Institute for 1927, at which the City Corporation
was represented, was held at Hastings, from July 11th to July 16th.
Your Acting Medical Officer of Health had the honour of reading a paper entitled
"Tuberculosis: A Note on the Health of Crews and Ships' Hygiene," in the Conference of
Medical Officers of Health, and also a paper on "Canned Foods," in the Hygiene of Food
Section.
The success of the Congress was due largely to the facilities afforded and arrangements
made by the Mayor and Corporation of Hastings, to the convenient nature of the Town as
a Congress centre, and from the City point of view, to the fact that the Corporation's delegates
were lodged under the same roof with the Council of the Institute and many delegates
from other parts of the country.
ROYAL INSTITUTE OF FUBLIC HEALTH, GHENT.
The City Corporation were, in accordance with custom, represented at the Congress
of the Royal Institute of Public Health, held at Ghent from the 1st to the 6th June, 1926.
The Congress, which had as its Patron, His Majesty the King of the Belgians, was
a very successful one, and many useful and instructive papers were read.
NATIONAL CONVENTION FOR THE PREVENTION OF TUBERCULOSIS, LONDON.
The National Convention for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, which was founded
thirty years ago, held their Annual Congress in London on June 30th, July 1st, and
July 2nd.
The Corporation were represented and the delegates heard discussions of particular
interest. All speakers were agreed that the incidence of tuberculosis is falling, and there
was a general agreement that this was due to two factors. The first, and the most important,
is the improvement in the surroundings, the education and the social conditions of the people.
The other is the adoption of definite measures for the prevention and the treatment of the
disease.
The Conference insisted on the need for the continuance of educative effort.
BRITISH SOCIAL HYGIENE COUNCIL, LONDON.
The Third Imperial Social Hygiene Congress, organised by the British Social Hygiene
Council, was held in London from the 3rd to the 7th October, inclusive.
The Corporation, at the request of this organisation, appointed delegates.
As the title of the Congress indicates, the subjects dealt with were, in the main, relative
to Social Hygiene. Interesting and instructive papers were read, followed by discussions
by social and other workers.
WORLD'S DAIRY CONGRESS.
The World's Dairy Congress is to be held in July, 1928. The City Corporation has
always been interested in any project which has in view the production of clean milk and
clean milk products available for the public, and has signified its support of the Congress
by making a grant of fifty guineas towards the expenses incurred. The Congress will be
the subject of a reference in the Annual Report for the year 1928.
