Investigations showed that it was necessary to reconstruct 109 of the connections
referred to. Of these, 84 have been completed and the remainder are,
at the time of writing this report, in process of reconstruction. As a result of
the inspection of the internal drainage system of these premises, reconstruction or
alteration was found necessary in 47 instances.
In the majority of cases these external drains were brick-barrel drains, in which
rats had their breeding places, and were, undoubtedly, a source of much annoyance
to the occupiers of the houses to which they were connected.
FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ACT, 1901, &c.
FACTORIES, WORKSHOPS AND WORKPLACES.—The premises upon the
Register number 3,660, in which are included 7,802 workrooms, &c.
There were served 2,180 notices during the year for various purposes under the
Acts.
