The birth rate in these Dwellings reached a maximum of 46 9 per 1,000 in 1896,
and has since been falling, as shown by the following figures:—

The baths provided for the use of tenants of these Buildings, which were
opened in May, 1904, continue to be extensively used, the number of persons
bathing during 1922 being 12,214, of whom 4,476 were males and 7,738 were
females.

CITY MORTUARY.
DISINFECTION—TRADE.—In accordance with the requirements of the
South African Government, the disinfection of second-hand clothing prior to
export to that country has been carried on as usual. The Corporation was asked
to assist the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury in the work during 1922 as the
apparatus used by that authority was out of order. Assistance was given as requested
until the new apparatus was installed in August.
The following table gives the details of the work of disinfection carried out at
the Disinfection Station during the year in connection with the export trade
