NEW ZEALAND.—New Zealand mutton and especially the lamb has maintained
its high reputation and obtained good prices.
In December, lamb sold at 7/10 per 8-lb. stone against 5/4 for 1921.
New Zealand beef deserves the same criticism as applies to Australian beef.
It is remarkable that a country which has attained so high a standard in
marketing lamb seems to devote little attention to attaining an equal high standard
in beef.
The inspection of New Zealand meat has always been good and maintains
that reputation.
Four hind quarters of beef were found affected with tuberculosis.
For total quantities of diseased and unsound food destroyed vide Summary.
DUTCH MEAT.—The quality and cleanliness of Dutch meat has been good
and as the figures in the "Supplies Tables" indicate, in great demand.
The inspection has generally been good, occasionally unsuitable carcases are
observed and reported on.
The Chief Veterinary Inspector (Dr. Remelts) has sent a representative and also
personally visited the markets in order to observe any defects in their own inspection
work.
Any criticism offered by us is always accepted in a good spirit and we are
certain every endeavour is made to export only that class of meat which reaches
the standard required at Smithfield.
22 pig carcases were found affected with tuberculosis.
For total quantities of diseased and unsound food destroyed vide Summary.
