HOUSING.
QUEEN'S COURT, MINORIES AREA.
In November, 1921, I submitted to the Sanitary Committee of the Corporation
a representation that houses numbered 1, 2, 3 & 4, Queen's Court, 3 & 5, Vine Street
and No. 7, The Circus, Minories, constituted an area which should be dealt with
under Part II. of the Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890.
The Sanitary Committee approved this recommendation and a scheme was
prepared and a local enquiry held at the Guildhall by the Ministry of Health on
the 18th May, 1922.
On the 19th October last, the City of London (Queen's Court, Minories Area
Improvement Scheme) Order, was issued approving the scheme.
In brief, the scheme, which affects 72 residents, provides that the Corporation
shall, except so far as the Minister may otherwise direct, demolish all the buildings
in the area, provided that they shall not demolish any occupied house until accommodation
for the occupants is available in new dwellings to be erected by the
Corporation unless the Corporation are satisfied that suitable alternative accommodation
for the occupants is available elsewhere. Further, the Corporation has
to provide on an approved site and in accordance with approved plans, dwellings
suitable for the accommodation of 72 persons of the working classes.
The Corporation acquired possession of the property by private treaty before
the scheme was approved.
As the tenements become empty they are not re-let, and in this way it is hoped
that in a short time the whole property will be available for demolition. At the
time of writing this report the occupants have vacated Nos. 1, 3 & 4, Queen's
Court and these premises have therefore been closed and not re-let.
