The first child was sent to the Cleansing Station on the 28th September, and from
that date to the end of the year 30 cleansings were carried out by the Superintendentin-Charge.
These cleansings related to 24 separate children, and involved the inspection of 16
homes, in four of which disinfection or cleansing was necessary.
This system will doubtless prove of considerable value in the prevention of the
spread of school infection, and will, moreover, furnish the Corporation with a new
source of information as to houses requiring sanitary supervision. The control of the
sanitary condition of the homes of school children is one of the most important duties
connected with sanitary administration, and the new departure has overcome to a large
extent the difficulties hitherto experienced of obtaining information as to the sanitary
surroundings amongst which the school children live.
CONTAMINATED MILK.
The investigation into the character of Milk arriving in London consigned to
traders in the City, which I instituted in 1902 and repeated during the years 1904,
1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909 and 1910, was continued in April of the present year.
The primary object of the enquiry, as in past years, was to ascertain to what
extent Milk, as delivered in the City of London, could be regarded as an active agent
in the dissemination of Consumption.
Forty-two samples were taken at railway stations in the City on arrival from the
following counties:—
Essex
Suffolk
Norfolk
Buckinghamshire
Bedfordshire
Derbyshire
Cambridgeshire
Huntingdonshire
