In the cases of the 3 adulterated samples purchased at provision shops, one was
dismissed, a fine of £2 and 17s. 6d. costs was inflicted in another case, and in the
third the defendant gave notice of a warranty. This he was not able to substantiate as
he relied on a receipted bill as being a warranty. The Alderman refused to recognise
this, but thought the defendant had paid butter price for the margarine and ordered
him to pay the costs—30s. Daring examination the defendant stated he had been
in business 32 years and did not know the difference between butter and margarine.
COFFEE.
It is satisfactory to report that none of the 18 samples of coffee examined during
the year were reported against.
In 1901 the percentage adulterated was 9*1.
MUSTARD.
17 samples of this article were examined, and in no case was adulteration detected.
In 1901 the percentage adulterated was 13'0.
COCOA.
8 samples of cocoa were submitted to examination, and all were satisfactory.
DRUGS.
Of the 48 samples of drugs procured at the various chemists' establishments in 1911
within the City, only one was found to be deficient. This was a sample of lime water
15 per cent. deficient in lime, and the vendor was cautioned.

The following Table shows the relation between place of purchase and adulteration:—
