During the year the Argentine Board of Agriculture has stationed in London
one of their Veterinary Surgeons (Dr. Castillo), whose duty is to see Argentine
meat which has been condemned, note the cause, and report to his Board with
suggested remedies for the defects.
The undermentioned countries are now represented in London by :—
Dr. Wray United States of America.
Dr. Castillo South America.
Mr. Crabb, M.R.C.V.S. New Zealand.
Dr. Berger (not permanently) Holland.
Mr. C. Cummins Cherry, B. V.Sc. Australia.
There has been a considerable reduction in the number of quarters of beef
deposited on the market in a mouldy condition ; this shows that more care has been
taken in the handling of the meat from the time the animals are killed until the
beef is deposited on the markets, and proves what was stated in the last Annual
Report, that the remedy, viz., " hygienic handling, sterilization, and rapid transport in
modern vessels," is in the hands of the importers themselves. I understand that a line
of ships carrying meat from Argentina are being; fitted with the " Linley Process,"
so we may expect a further reduction in the quantities of mouldy beef seen on the
markets.
Exportation of Meat to the Continent.
During the year strenuous endeavours have been made to obtain markets for meat
on the Continent with apparently a measure of success ; should the trade develop, there
seems little doubt that meat will be shipped direct from the producing countries, not
via England.
In order to meet the requirements of the Continental Sanitary Authorities, the
meat sent from London was examined, a label and seal affixed, and a Veterinary
Surgeon's Certificate granted. The following table shows the work done :—
