CHILDREN ACT, 1908.
(8. EDW. 7. Ch. 67.)
This Act received the Royal Assent on the 21st December, 1908, and will come
into force on 1st April, 1909. The Corporation is the Authority within the
City for carrying out Part I. of the Act dealing with Infant Life Protection,
which provides:
Section 1. That when a person undertakes for reward the nursing and
maintenance of one or more infants under the age of seven years, apart from
their parents, or having no parents, he shall, within 48 hours from the
reception of any such infant, give notice in writing thereof to the Sanitary
Authority. In cases when the period for which the infant is received is for
48 hours or less, this Section does not apply.
Under Section 2, it is made the duty of the local authority to put this part
of the Act into execution, and to make inquiry with regard to persons within
their district undertaking the nursing and maintenance of infants coming
within the scope of the Act.
The local authority is further charged with the duty of seeing that such
infants are visited from time to time by duly appointed inspectors of either
sex. Provision is also made to afford such inspectors right of entry in cases
where there is reason to believe there is a contravention of this part of the
Act.
