REMOVAL OF FISH OFFAL.
The contract with Messrs. F. S. Hempleman and Co. for the removal of
Fish Offal expired on the 21st May, 1908, and on the recommendation of the
City Engineer and your Medical Officer of Health was renewed for a further
period of twelve months.
The conditions of the contract require that the Contractor collect and remove,
free of charge, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 a.m., all fish offal from the
Corporation Markets and Fishmongers' premises in the City, to the entire
satisfaction of the Medical Officer of Health, in specially constructed galvanised
iron bins, of a pattern approved by that officer, and to thoroughly cleanse
and disinfect such bins before returning them to the markets and shops.
DRAINAGE, ROYAL EXCHANGE.
The whole of the drainage of this building has now been reconstructed,
and new connections made to the main sewers in Threadneedle Street, Royal
Exchange Buildings and Cornhill. The old brick drain which formerly
surrounded the Royal Exchange has been cut off and filled in with concrete,
pedestal water-closets fixed, and a new system of ventilation provided.
Sanitary accommodation has been provided for women, and a key given to
each of the firms where such are employed.
RAILWAY STATIONS.
Periodical inspections were made of the sanitary accommodation provided
at the twenty-five Railway Stations in the City.
In 12 of them, the Companies they belong to have been called upon to
effect sanitary improvements thereat. The defects, for the most part, have
been due to lack of proper cleaning and to defective drains and sanitary
fittings. In each case the necessary works have been satisfactorily
carried out.
INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS.
The undermentioned schools in the district have been inspected, various
defects found, and the following works executed:—
Greystoke Place Day Training College.—New branch drains,
water-closets and lavatory basins have been constructed.
Moorfields Day Training College.—New iron drains laid, trapped
and ventilated, new water-closets and waste pipes fixed.
