As the majority of those known to be trading are willing to be placed under
supervision, and as the object of such control aims at nothing more than:—
(1) Reasonable hours of work,
(2) Healthy conditions of employment,
(3) Prevention of accidents from machinery,
it seemed only reasonable that the protection of the Act should be made compulsory
in all cases, and the Sanitary Committee approved the principle on the
recommendation of your Medical Officer of Health. The Bill reached the
Second Reading, but was withdrawn on the 6th July.
SUMMER FLUSHING OF COURTS.
The usual flushing of courts and alleys in the more thickly-populated and
poorer parts of the City was carried out as usual during the summer months
under the directions of the Superintendent of Cleansing.
The main streets and thoroughfares were also regularly and frequently
washed, and your Engineer informs me that in the above services no less than
61,953,459 gallons of water were used. Disinfectants were also freely
applied where necessary.
In the subjoined lists the places marked * * * were flushed every twenty
four hours, those marked * * twice a week, and those marked * once a week.
