BLOUSE AND UNDERSKIRT MAKERS.
An inspection has been made of all the premises where blouse and underskirt
making is carried on, known to exist in the City. These comprise nine
factories and ninety-five workshops. Over one hundred defects were found,
four-fifths of which were in respect of defective or unsuitable sanitary
accommodation. The actual workrooms were on the whole in a fairly satisfactory
condition; in many workrooms special means of ventilation have
been adopted to remove the injurious products of combustion emanating
from gas stoves used for heating irons; gas irons are more difficult to deal
with: where these are used they should, if possible, be placed in a specially
ventilated room, apart from the general workroom. Electric irons are used
in some workshops, and they are far the most desirable from a health point
of view.
