HYGIENIC REFORM IN HAIRDRESSERS' AND
BARBERS' SHOPS.
In October last it was referred to your Medical Officer of Health to
ascertain what regulations, if any, were in force in other countries for
controlling the business of hairdresser or barber. Enquiries in this direction
were instituted, and replies received from the British representatives abroad
in 48 Foreign States and 14 British Colonies.
As a result of these enquiries it was ascertained that sanitary or other
regulations or statutes especially controlling the conduct of the business of
hairdressers or barbers exist in but few countries, and that there are none in
force in any British Colony.
It is of interest to note that in many quarters the matter is under
consideration, and it is extremely probable that sooner or later regulations
of this nature will be universally applied.
It being advisable that the City should lead rather than follow in questions
of hygienic reform, the Sanitary Committee have under consideration a
scheme, pending legislation, that there is every reason to believe will
satisfactorily deal with the matter so far as the City is concerned.
