The apparent reduction in the amount of work performed by the Sanitary
Inspectors in 1902 was due to the fact that in that year for the first time
the work done under the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, was not included
in this Table, and was transferred to the part of the Report dealing with
that subject.
In several instances, owing to non-compliance with notice to remedy
sanitary defects, it was found necessary to refer the particulars to the City
Solicitor, and in each case the work was subsequently completed without
further legal proceedings.
HOUSE REFUSE REMOVAL.
The Superintendent of Cleansing reports that the refuse removed from the
City in 1903 consisted of 31,863 cartloads of street sweepings and slop, and
50,584 loads of house and trade refuse ; total, 82,447. Of this bulk, 26,421
loads were consumed by the Destructor at Letts' Wharf; this was 1 per cent.
less than last year, but 0'3 per cent. above the average for the previous five
years.
