to 568l. 19s. 6d. Four prosecutions were in respect of beef, three of mutton,
seven of pigs or pork, one fish, and one rabbits.
There has been no new development at Leadenhall Market; in its own
particular line it stands alone, but as it is a toll-free market there is no
account taken of the weight of meat, poultry, game, &c., going into it, and so
it is impossible to tell the rate of increase in the supply.
ALDGATE SLAUGHTERHOUSES.
The Slaughterhouses at Aldgate continue an unsatisfactory feature, the
trade is on the decline, and it seems probable that in the near future some of
them will cease to be used as such, a consummation devoutly to be desired.
Most of the meat consumed by the Jewish community in the Metropolis was
formerly killed at these places, but it is now chiefly slaughtered at Deptford.
Since 1898, two, viz., Nos. 53-54, and 62, Aldgate High Street, have been
closed by order of the Lord Mayor for neglect of Bye-laws, and in three,
viz., Nos. 57, 58 and 60, the right to slaughter therein has lapsed owing to
non-user. Those now remaining are situated at the following places, viz.,
Nos. 44, 45, 46, 48, 49-51, 52, 55 and 56, Aldgate High Street.
TUBERCULOSIS IN MEAT.
The circular letter on the subject of Tuberculosis in Meat, referred to in
your Medical Officer's last Annual Report, was issued in March, 1903.
Upwards of 6,800 were sent out, of which 3,050 were supplied in response to
written applications to the Town Clerk for further copies. The accompanying
list will show that the distribution was made as far-reaching as possible.
