vinced of its unwholesomeness until it causes an
outbreak of disease, like that occasioned by the
pump in St. James', Westminster, and by the
pump at Stratford. Such a calamity might happen
at any moment in the City by a slight failure in
the filtering powers of the soil, or by the irruption
of sewage from a neighbouring drain. It is time
that the water of the City pumps should be disused,
except for the purposes of street cleansing, and
that the filtered water of the drinking fountains
should take its place.
The other tables in the Appendix require no
explanation; I therefore submit them without
comment,
