† Resident civilian population, plus any British, Commonwealth or Foreign Armed Forces stationed in the area. |
There was a net increase of 6,000 in the estimated population from the previous year's
figure; this is not necessarily a reversal of the downward trend of the past ten years but
rather an adjustment of the estimate in the light of the results of the 1961 census. The
main changes in the estimate are the loss of 18,000 in the school age population (5-14 years)
offset by a corresponding increase at 15-24 years, as children born in the years of high
fertility immediately after the war moved into the next higher age range.
