HEALTH SERVICE PREMISES
Building programme
In 1962, at the request of the Minister of Health, the Council, in common with all other
local health authorities in England and Wales, produced a plan for the development of the
health and welfare services for the ten years 1962-72. This included a health service building
programme for the period which superseded the one for 1960/65 which was in existence.
In preparing this new programme the Council endeavoured to formulate one which had
reasonable prospects of achievement having regard to Ministerial guidance on capital
expenditure and priorities, the shortage of land in the London area and the limitations
which might be imposed by availability of professional and technical staff needed to build
or to staff the new premises. The total cost of the schemes programmed for the ten years
is of the order of £4,630,000, three-quarters of which is for the mental health and ambulance
services.
Details of new schemes programmed for 1963/64 are given in table (iii) and the estimated
cost of the works is £907,500. About one-fifth of this cost will be met from London County
Council or Metropolitan Borough Council housing capital, in respect of purpose designed
accommodation for day nurseries and maternity, child welfare and school treatment
centres being provided in the ground floors of new housing blocks on a rental basis.
Tables (i) and (ii) show works completed in 1962 and schemes in hand at the end of 1962
from earlier programmes; table (iv) gives a list of acquisitions and leases completed in
1962.
