The proportion not born in the United Kingdom has increased from 101 per 1,000 for
both males and females in 1951 to 164 per 1,000 for males and 153 for females in 1961.
Principally the increase has been in persons born in the Irish Republic and in the West
Indies; similar details for the year 1961 in the metropolitan boroughs are given in table
A.(iii). Persons born in the Irish Republic are more frequent in the north and west, the
boroughs of Hammersmith, Hampstead, Paddington and St. Pancras; immigrants from
the Commonwealth, mainly Asian and West Indian, are more frequent in the boroughs of
Kensington, Paddington, St. Pancras, Islington, Stoke Newington and Lambeth; foreign
