Accidents in the home—Display units dealing with home safety, from the Council's
stand at the Ideal Home Exhibition at Olympia, were exhibited at various public libraries
in the division.
Mental health service—Community care services for the mentally ill established in 1961
were developed further. The psychiatric social club started in April 1961 at Tooting is a
flourishing and successful venture, with attendances of between 40 and 50 on the one
evening in the week and a second club was started at Putney health centre. The scheme
for giving occupation and instruction in their homes to mentally ill persons was extended
to eight sessions a week.
A meeting was arranged in April, which some 200 persons attended, to bring before
people engaged in public life and social work the altered approach to mental health and
the facilities available in the division.
Chellow Dene residential hostel was opened in July, with accommodation for 23 men
and women who require a period of sheltered accommodation to help them to establish
themselves in employment and in the community as a whole after recovery from mental
illness.
To meet the increased demand for training centre places for older girls a new centre
with 40 places, Newlands training centre, Tooting, was opened in September. The
Clapham industrial training centre for older boys and men got into its stride and made
in quantity articles such as duckboards, children's swings, sleeve ironing boards, tabletennis
bats and bundled firewood.
Handicapped children—Arrangements were made for a part-time unit, known as the
Roehampton child guidance unit, to commence at the William Harvey welfare centre.
To provide for more centrally located facilities for the young partially deaf child, a parttime
auditory training centre has been established at Wandsworth school treatment centre.
