VISITORS TO THE DEPARTMENT
During the year 570 visitors were received through the central office—of whom 407 came
from overseas.
The Minister of Health paid an informal visit to Pakenham House welfare centre in
division 8.
Individual overseas visitors included the Minister of Health for Eastern Nigeria, the head
of local government in Western Nigeria, the Minister of Health and Home Affairs, Queensland,
Australia, a chief medical officer of the World Health Organisation, a member of the
Oslo Board of Health, the Mayor of Bombay, the Paramount Chief of the Moyamba
district of Sierra Leone, a member of the Japanese Parliament, the head of the Foreign
Relations section of the Ministry of Social Welfare in Indonesia and the Secretary to the
Governor of the Punjab; also 39 doctors, 21 local government officers, 24 social workers,
19 nurses, one university director, 12 teachers, two journalists, four speech therapists, one
architect, one hospital administrator and six students.
Parties included doctors and psychologists from the U.S. President's Panel on Mental
Retardation, Foreign Service students from Laos, members of a Belgian Women's
Organisation, students from Africa and Asia, German social workers,' Cento 'representatives,
social workers from Malaya, doctors from the International Children's Centre in
Paris, a party of doctors from the 'Medical World' International conference and delegates
of the World Organisation for Childhood Education. Altogether visitors were received
from 53 overseas countries.
Other visitors were received at divisional offices, Woodberry Down health centre, the
London Ambulance Service headquarters and the Council's training centres for mentally
subnormal children. The health centre was visited by 1,049 people, 256 from overseas and
793 (711 students) from the United Kingdom; the Ambulance Service headquarters received
191 visitors and training centres 537 visitors, including 432 students.
Facilities were again provided for medical, nursing and social science students to study
the health services. Courses of visits of observation and talks were arranged for post-graduate
students preparing for the Diploma in Child Health and the Diploma in Public Health.
Members of the department's nursing staff gave talks to student nurses at hospitals and
programmes were arranged to enable 3,883 of these students to gain practical experience.
Talks by members of the staff and/or visits of observation and periods of attachment
were also arranged for students from the following training centres:
