The following statement shows the number of staff employed in the Public Health
department at the end of the year (part-time staff are expressed as whole-time equivalents).

(a) Including divisional health offices, home help offices, welfare centres, school treatment centres, training
centres for the mentally sub-normal, etc.
(b) Including residential schools and nurseries, Welfare department homes, recuperative holiday homes,
ambulance stations, outfall works laboratories, central dental laboratory.
(c) There are 136 visiting medical officers employed at residential establishments on a part-time basis whom
it is not possible to compute in terms of whole-time staff. They have therefore been omitted from the table.
(d) Including physiotherapists, speech therapists, dental surgery assistants, dental technicians.
(e) Including psychiatric social workers, mental welfare officers, welfare officers (chest clinics), social
workers (health services) etc., and workers in allied fields (e.g. home help organisers).
Appointments and retirements—On 30 April, Mr. R. H. J. Stronge, Establishment Officer
of the department since 1948, retired on reaching the age of 65, his place being taken by
Mr. T. A. Wright, previously Administrative and Establishment Officer of the Parks
department. Mr. W. H. Joyce, Principal Clerk of Division C of the department retired on
12 April and was succeeded by Mr. C. W. Shaddick.
Miss L. Berry, Divisional Nursing Officer, retired on 30 October, her position being
taken by Miss M. V. Naunton. Miss E. Beattie, Divisional Nursing Officer, left the Council's
service on 16 June on appointment as Principal Nursing Officer, S.S.A.F.A.; she was
succeeded by Miss E. A. Evans.
