The four child guidance units conducted by the Council continued their work without
major changes of staff, though at all of them the waiting lists are constantly growing
as the units become better known. The new unit at Woodberry Down health centre
has rapidly become established in the neighbourhood and towards the end of the year
the North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board agreed to increase the number
of psychiatrists' sessions from two to four. Earlier in the year an educational psychologist
and an additional part-time psychiatric social worker had been appointed.
The two clinics which are run in association with the local infant welfare centres
continued their work with children under 5 years of age (see page 57).
A new boarding school for maladjusted children—Shaftesbury House, Royston—
was opened during the year; as at other similar schools a psychiatrist visits regularly
and is assisted by a psychiatric social worker. At Bredinghurst School, the psychotherapist
is now employed full-time.
Two additional part-time psychiatrists were engaged in April to visit the Council's
residential establishments and to advise staff on the psychological aspects of child care.
The arrangements for psychiatric services at remand homes and reception homes
have continued successfully throughout the year.
The following table gives details of the work carried out during the year at the four units for which the Council is responsible:
