Digestive
Mortality from digestive diseases (other than cancer) in 1953 was 0.42 per 1,000.
Within this group the death-rate from ulcer of the stomach or duodenum was 0.16 per
1,000 compared with 0.17 in 1952 and 0.19 in 1951.
Diabetes
Diabetes mortality fell steadily between 1930 and 1947, but in the last five years the
death-rates have been 0.07, 0.08, 0.09, 0.08, 0.07 which supports the impression that the
previous decline had been connected with the dietary stringency of the war and post-war
years. As will be seen from Table 3 (page 146) the current figure of 0.07 is the same as
that for the period 1946.50 and lower than that for any other quinquennium in the
