Defective hearing was noted in 1,136 children (0.59 per cent.). The Council's
policy of placing children suffering from partial deafness in "hard of hearing classes"
reduces of course, the number of children with defective hearing found in the older
age groups at statutory inspections of elementary school children. The proportion
of children found with defective hearing in 1923 was 0.7 per cent.
Enlarged
glands.
Enlarged glands of the neck were noted in 8,150 children (4.23 per cent.),
Although there was no increase in the amount of otorrhœa, this other condition,
which is also closely associated with unhealthy throat conditions, showed an increase
for in 1923 the proportion was 3.9 per cent.

The returns showed surprising differences in visual acuity between the various
schools in the Whitechapel area, the returns from non-Jewish schools following

showing an abnormally heavy incidence of defects.
