Comparison can be made of certain causes of death in metropolitan boroughs by reference to
the following table. The death rates shown in the table are fully corrected for deaths in institutions
(see footnote ('), page 7), and in the case of phthisis and cancer, " factors for correction for
differences in age and sex constitution," have been calculated, and these factors and the corrected
death-rates are shown ou pages 40 and 42.

Principal Epidemic Diseases.
The number of deaths in the administrative county of London from the principal epidemic
diseases, viz.—Smallpox, measles, scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping-cough, typnus, enteric
and ill-defined fevers and diarrhœa, during 1903 (52 weeks) was 8,088, giving an annual deathrate
of 1.75 per 1,000 living.

* For the purposes of the tables on pages 41 and 42 "Cancer" includes the deaths from carcinoma and sarcoma which are here
separately distinguished.
