Deaths from certain diseases and groups of diseases.

The following table from the Annual Summary of the Registrar-General shows the diminution or excess in the year 1903 under certain of the more important headings in the list of causes of death, as compared with the corrected annual average of the preceding 10 years—

It will be seen from the foregoing table that the rate of infant mortality was highest in
Shoreditch (171) and lowest in Hampstead (88). The infant mortality in London during each
of the four quarters of the year 1903 was as follows—first quarter, 127 ; second quarter, 102;
third quarter, 139; and fourth quarter, 152 per 1,000 births.
