With regard to the disposal of beer spillings, in 60 cases the spillings were either thrown
away or returned to the brewers, but in 64 instances they were re-sold after passing through
a utilizer, and in the remainder the spillings were returned to the barrel after filtering by
various methods, and then re-sold—an arrangement which cannot be looked upon favourably
During the year 263 visits have been paid by the Sanitary Inspectors, and correspondence
has ensued with the several brewers in order to overcome the various shortcomings.
Rodent Control.
In conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, rodent control was
continued energetically throughout the year. It can be said that the heavy infestations
which were apparent in 1945 have been eradicated and the long-term control of the persistent
infestations by the investigation and repairing of defective drains constitutes the most important
work of this service.
Eight operatives and one Rodent Officer, working under the part-time supervision of
a Sanitary Inspector were employed on rodent control. 1,981 premises were treated and
9,038 investigated. 12,418 visits were made for laying and checking prebaits and poison
baits.
With the co-operation of the Borough Engineer's Department, two sewer campaigns
were undertaken, one of which was a double treatment, i.e., a complete treatment was carried
out with one type of prebait and poison, immediately followed by a further treatment with
a different prebait and poison. It is estimated that this work resulted in the destruction of
approximately 13,500 rats.
