Medical Examinations for Superannuation Purposes.
The Council resolved that as from the 1st October, 1947, medical examinations for superannuation
purposes should be carried out by the Medical Officer of Health or a member of his
medical staff.
Since that date 54 persons have been examined for permanent positions in the Council's
service and all have been passed as fit.
It has been very pleasing to see the excellent condition of the teeth of young entrants,
particularly so in those who have served in the armed forces. I have been carrying out
superannuation examinations for over twenty years and the improvement that I have seen
in this past year is well marked. I think this improvement is largely due to a more equal
distribution of those essentials in the diet which are conducive to good teeth and to the care
which has resulted from the dental services in the forces.
In addition to these 54, I have examined another 29 persons referred to me for a second
opinion. In 21 of these cases I have been able to pass the applicant for superannuation purposes ;
seven I have failed and one case is to be reviewed shortly. Seven other members of the staff
have been examined in connection with retirement or in order that I could give an opinion as
to their fitness to carry out the type of work in which they were employed.
There remains for me the pleasant task once again of thanking the Council and the
Committees I have served for the help and courtesy I have received at all times, and to
acknowledge the ever ready co-operation of my colleagues and the unstinted assistance of the
staff for whom I am responsible. It is indeed a pleasure to work in a borough where Councillors
and Officials alike put forth so much effort and give their Medical Officer of Health so much
encouragement in improving the health and happiness of the residents of the district.
I beg to remain,
Your Worship, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
DENNIS H. GEFFEN,
Medical Officer of Health.
