The principal changes in connection with Maternity and Child Welfare Work were the
closing of the Argyle Square Welfare Centre and its amalgamation with the Somers Town
Centre and a similar transfer of the work from the Grafton Road to the Camden Town Centre
on the completion of the new premises, Barnes House.
Further valuable contributions to working class housing accomodation in the Borough
were made during the year in connection with the various schemes which are being undertaken
by the Borough Council, the London County Council, the St. Pancras House Improvement
Society and also on the Crown Estate in the Cumberland Market area. In Somers Town a
block containing 18 flats was completed by the Borough Council, and Barnes House, Camden
Road, which, in addition to 22 self-contained flats, also provides accommodation for a Welfare
Centre, Tuberculosis Dispensary and Show-rooms for the Electricity Department, was
completed and occupied early in the year.
Two members of the stall of the department retired on superannuation :—Mr. Rackham,
a district Sanitary Inspector after 34 years' service and Miss Smythe, Superintendent of the
Queen's Crescent Welfare Centre, after 14 years' service from the time the Centre was taken
over by the Borough Council.
Dr. Ethel Iredell, a part-time Medical Officer at the Somers Town Centre, tendered her
resignation in September owing to ill-health. Dr. Iredell had been associated with the Centre
since its commencement in 1918, and it was with great regret that news of her death was
received within a brief period of her resignation.
In conclusion, I have again to thank the Chairman and members of the Public Health
Committee for the consideration so constantly extended to me, and the staff of the department
for their loyal co-operation.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
G. SO WD EN,
Medical Officer of Health.
